Exclusive: Phil Collins reveals he will never drum again due to spine injury

Phil Collins yesterday revealed he will never play the drums again because of a spine injury.

The Genesis star says he can no longer even hold his drum sticks because sitting at a kit is too painful.

Phil, 58, said: "I've got a condition that means I can't play any more. After playing drums for 50 years, I've had to stop.

"Obviously I'm very sad about it. My vertebrae has been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in.

"It comes from years of playing. I can't even hold the sticks properly without it being painful.

"I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through.

But don't worry, I can still sing."

The news will be heartbreaking for Phil's millions of fans worldwide.

A friend said: "He is devastated as drumming is everything to him. It's how he made his name and it set him on the road to superstardom.

"But drumming has been getting more and more painful and he decided enough was enough and called it a day. He has to put his health first."

Phil, who has sold more than 150 millions albums, was speaking at a garden party on Tuesday in aid of the Prince's Trust.

He is a celebrity ambassador for the charity and Prince Charles and Camilla invited Phil to the reception at their Highgrove home near Tetbury, Glos.

Phil first found stardom as the drummer in 70s prog rock favourites Genesis after answering an advert in the music paper Melody Maker He initially only did backing vocals but took over the microphone when lead singer Peter Gabriel left in 1975.

A Trick Of The Tail, the group's first album featuring Collins on lead vocals, entered the charts at No.3.

He subsequently launched a solo career as well and his first album Face Value went to No.1.

It was followed by a string of hit singles such as In The Air Tonight and You Can't Hurry Love.

Phil, who was a child actor, also starred in the 1988 movie Buster.

In 1996 he announced was leaving Genesis after 26 years.

He recently won a new generation of fans with a Cadbury's advert featuring a gorilla drumming along to In The Air Tonight.

It became an instant YouTube classic generating millions of hits and a chart re-release reached No.14.

That's really sad. Can you imagine having to give that up after 50 years?

Yep. That's some sad news. Obviously, Collins is an excellent songwriter and musician... but I always felt that his drumming was often overlooked. He was always an excellent drummer, especially on their earlier progressive stuff.

Facebook: sucks royal ass!
I don't want to sound like an asshole, but I didn't get much comfort when he said "Don't worry. I can still sing."

Ok, I did sound like an asshole.

Mybe there is still hope.

QUOTE
In the UK press today, there appeared some articles about Phil's physical state, with some slightly misleading headlines. Here, in Phil's own words, are how he describes his situation:

"There isn't any drama regarding my 'disability' and playing drums.
Somehow during the last Genesis tour I dislocated some vertebrae in my upper neck and that affected my hands. After a successful operation on my neck, my hands still can't function normally.

"Maybe in a year or so it will change, but for now it is impossible for me to play drums or piano. I am not in any 'distressed' state, stuff happens in life."

Phil

In comments widely reported in the German newspaper Bild, and also Hamburger Abendblatt, Collins not only revealed he is considering a return to working as a musician but also mentioned that he would even consider working as a member of Genesis again!

Collins was widely reported to have retired from the music business following health problems that prevented him from drumming back in 2011, although he was forced in the wake of much online and media speculation to announce on his own website that he was not retiring, but taking time out to focus on family life.

Now it appears that same family have inspired in him the desire to create music again. Back in August of this year, his eldest son Simon, singer and drummer with Prog Award winners Sound Of Conact announced of his dad: “He’s great. He’s doing really well. He’s starting to write again actually and spending more time with family, myself included. I think he’s just enjoying taking a much needed, much deserved break from the insanity of going on tour for years on end. As much as that is his deepest passion as it is mine, it’s important to sit back sometimes and actually enjoy what you’ve achieved and spend some time with family. So that is what’s happening in our camp.”

Speaking earlier this week Phil announced that his younger sons Nicholas and Matthew’s desire to see their father working again had fired his recent interest, stating he wouldn’t have been interested if his manager had suggested the fact but he is more motivated by his sons’ interest.

Bild went even further, quoting Collins as saying: ”I’m thinking about doing some shows again, even with Genesis. Everything is possible. We could tour in Australia and South America. We haven’t been there yet.”

The full Bild article in German can be seen here, while the Hamburger Abendblatt story, also in German, can be seen here.

There has been no word from the Genesis camp on any potential future activity as yet. Genesis celebrate the 40th Anniversary of their Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album in November 2014.

Actually, I've been hearing Genesis reunion rumors... Now whether that's Collins-era or Gabriel-era (or both) is anyone's guess.
