Plans for a new Yes line-up
Chris Squire, Steve Howe and Alan White are arranging a new line-up of Yes with Oliver Wakeman (keys) and Benoît David (vocals). The band plan to tour North America towards the end of this year, with a break in early 2009 given Howe's prior commitments to Asia, and then further Yes touring in other markets. There are conflicting reports as to whether new material will be forthcoming soon. After some months of rumours, R. Wakeman confirmed plans for a new line-up and tour with a "tribute singer" while a band representative confirmed David as the new vocalist at "The Director's Cut" DVD screening in early Sep. An official announcement on the new line-up soon seems likely: in early Sep, Squire said on Yesfans.com that "In the near future, I look forward to everyone knowing Yes' upcoming plans."

Veteran progressive rock group Yes is scheduled to hit the road for its upcoming North American tour, titled 'In the Present,' starting on November 4. But this tour has an interesting twist: Original lead singer Jon Anderson won't be involved as he is recovering from acute respiratory failure. Instead, the vocal duties will fall on Benoit David, a singer for a Yes tribute band who was found by the actual Yes on the Internet. He will join bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, guitarist Steve Howe and keyboardist Oliver Wakeman for this tour.

The move, however, sparked a response from Anderson on his website, on which he recently wrote that he felt "disrespected" that the band would proceed to tour without him as he was recuperating. Anderson also wrote he was "disappointed that, with the exception of one phone call from Alan, none of the guys have been in touch since my illness."

Bassist Squire, who founded the band with Anderson 40 years ago, tells Spinner that he is sad that the longtime singer felt disrespected. He confirms that Anderson has not been officially replaced as a member of the band. "We've been together longer than most marriages," Squire says. "Jon will always be a member of Yes. I hope he has a full recovery and that he can come back."

Squire has not spoken with Anderson since the latter's recent comments. "I send him flowers and get well cards," he says. "I'm assuming that when he's fully recovered, he'll get back in touch." He also says that Anderson knew beforehand about the move to hire a new touring singer. "I didn't tell him personally," Squire says. "Our manager to a degree was dealing with the politics of it, which, at the time, seemed the most appropriate thing."

Originally Yes was planning to tour North America this past summer to celebrate their 40th anniversary, but that was postponed when Anderson was sent to the hospital for his respiratory condition last May. "The Yes fan base in general has been very frustrated that Yes hasn't been doing shows for four years," Squire explains. "Of course I wish [Jon] a full recovery, and I hope he'll be well enough to come back at a later date. On the other hand, this might not happen. So we decided to look into, in my own words, getting an understudy for him to fill in."

That understudy is Benoit David, a singer for a Canadian Yes tribute band called Close to the Edge, named after Yes' 1972 album. Squire discovered David on the Web through a friend. "He said that you should check this out," says the bassist. "So I did and thought, 'Wow, this guy is really, really good.' He didn't sound that dissimilar to Jon, and I thought [of him as someone] who could be this candidate as an understudy."

Squire recalls the conversation he had with David on the phone about him joining the group. "He was at a marina at the time when I called him, working on someone's boat," he says. "Of course I put the idea to him about maybe coming into Yes. He says 'I must be being punked. I'm looking around for the cameras.'"

As for this latest tour, Squire says that they will try to perform some numbers that has never been part of the regular Yes set lists. "We're hoping to do 'Parallels' from the 'Going for the One' album, and Steve Howe suggested doing a song from 'Time and a Word,' Yes' second album. And then of course we'll try to do a couple of things from the 'Drama' album, in which Steve, myself and Alan were very involved with, which Jon didn't sing on anyway."

Squire has been the only member who has never left the band in Yes' 40-year history that included numerous personnel changes. "The thought of being in a band that would still be performing shows and making new music 40 years later was just not on the radar at all," he says. "But here we still are."

Recently, Dan Forth at Classic Rock Forever spoke with Yes' Jon Anderson, who had been sidelined by health problems and unable to go on tour with Yes - dates that were cancelled. Although the band is now set to embark on a tour next month, it will be without Anderson. Below is an excerpt from Dan's interview with Jon. Visit the Classic Rock Forever website for the full interview:

We take it for granted – or maybe forget – but hearing "Roundabout" on the radio in 1972 was a very big deal. People didn’t quite know what to make of it … especially when it was sandwiched between Donny Osmond’s "Puppy Love" and a Bobby Vinton song. There was a lot going on with that tune - and it didn’t fit into any particular music box. After the usual "classical meets rock" observations, chatter seemed to revolve around the same two things – the lyrics ("mountains coming out of the sky?") and "that guy's" voice.

The creative force of Jon Anderson and his distinctive voice was our companion as we moved from AM to FM and our record collections expanded from singles to albums. [...] Fast forward 35 years and we're all grown up – empty nesters maybe. We've been to more concerts in the past year than we've been to in the past ten. Most of the bands that really meant something to us are on tour, and damn it, we’re going to see them this time – because we might never get another chance to see them again. Bands like YES. Well, maybe.

"The YES 40th Anniversary tour was cancelled this past summer after Jon Anderson was put out of commission and ordered to rest for six months due to a respiratory ailment. A few weeks later it was announced that there would be a tour after all. The "In The Present" tour would be kicking off in November – fronted by a singer who hailed from a YES tribute band – and discovered on YouTube. So we would have our chance to see YES in concert. Right?

Well, not according to "that voice." Soon after the new lineup for the tour was announced, Jon Anderson had an announcement of his own: "This is not YES on tour."

ClassicRockForever (CRF): It's been a couple of months since the news about your health – do you have any updates that you’d like to share?

Jon Anderson (JA): As for my health now, I truly feel reborn, it’s gonna take some months before I can do shows, but my dreams are coming true. I have so many blessings, my wonderful Angel Janee, my beautiful kids, friends and family and fans alike. Their words of love and kindness have touched me beyond belief [...]

(CRF): Here’s a recent quote from Chris Squire to Billboard.com: "Unfortunately Jon has had these health problems for the last few years, which is why it’s taken such a long time (since 2004) to have any YES shows out there. We’ve had to be very respectful of the fact he’s not been well and he's been in and out of the hospital having quite a few major procedures. If Jon is well again next year, he'll be back." Do you see things the same way?

(JA): Like most people my age, I’m now 64 this month, the body/mind goes through so many changes. I feel that my health has always been strong enough for the band … up until 2004. There had been too many tours, too much friction from outside of the band. This had made it impossible to keep touring the way YES truly should - and with NO new music, a lack of passion for the music and each other, and no real promotion of who YES truly is, etc., things just looked so bleak. That’s why I suggested a break for 6 months, maybe do a progressive acoustic CD, and tour on a different style of touring, semi-acoustic for a while, and less shows per year … just for us to realize who we were. [...]

Bill Bruford Announces Retirement From Public Performance; Releases Two CD Collections And Autobiography

Yes, King Crimson, and Earthworks drummer and bandleader Bill Bruford has announced that he will no longer perform in public. After an exemplary 41-year career that has moved through progressive rock to electronic jazz and on to acoustic jazz, Bruford will hang up his sticks and concentrate on "related activities."

"It's been an exciting four decades, but now it's someone else's turn," said Bruford. "I'd like to thank my friends and colleagues and the greater listening public for giving me a more-than-fair hearing. My ambition was always to try to contribute to drumming and music in the broader sense - to try to imagine a better way of doing things today, or the sort of things we might expect drummers to be doing tomorrow. If I've managed to push things forward an inch or two over the years, then that is a source of satisfaction." Bruford will continue to talk and write on the subject of his career and the percussion scene in general, and will continue to archive and manage his voluminous back catalogue of recordings on Summerfold and Winterfold Records.
