Oh yeah, because yours was oh so clever in the first place. Can only do so much when I'm given crappy material to start with. :P

This reminds me of the last big country music awards. The Eagles performed and they were the most country thing on the entire program. The rest was pop-rock songs with a nasaly twang.

Have you ever heard an Alice Cooper song by the name of "Poison?"

Pop + Rock + Nasal = Al Cooper & the Tumbleweed Gang :P

Why is country leaning towards pop rock a bad thing?

I don't know... but I think that particular knife cuts both ways.

There are PLENTY of rockers out there that made entire careers out of cliché party lyrics and "don't let the man hold you down" songs.

Last I checked, Toby Keith hadn't cornered the market on Cheese-Whiz... at least, not while Bret "Nothin' But A Good Time" Michaels is still touring...

Amusingly enough, country, pop, and rap music have all been found to correlate with a higher opinion of one's own intelligence and to negatively correlate with actual measured intelligence. Rock & Metal have shown more or less the opposite results, as have Classical, Folk, Jazz and Blues.

Since when did we all have to have a PhD to listen to rock and metal?

That would rule you out at the first note... :tease:

Besides, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that classical music is for pretentious, pompous asses anyway... :P

There... I think I've offended everyone now.

Ahh... Apparently, I've offended.

I think waiting for sobriety may be a lost cause, though... so I'll take a stab at this again.

I'm not sure why so many are attacking country as a genre when so much of 80s rock/metal was filled with simplistic, good-time party tunes with all the sophistication of a pot-bellied pig at a wedding reception. Where's the distinction?

There are plenty of great songwriters in Nashville... I just don't think many here have given them much of a chance, opting to only listen to the occasional pop-friendly, cutesy tune played on the radio.

That's like condemning rock and metal as a genre simply because Poison liked to serve their tunes with extra cheese...

"Every Rose Has It's Thorn" would fit right in on country radio, no? It's a nice song, but Bret will probably never be mistaken for Keats.

Seriously though, saying you don't like country in general is one thing... condemning the entire genre as no-talent is something else, IMHO. That's definition fits rap much better, in any event...

The "pretentious pompous ass" comment was sort of a long-running joke here based on a discussion about classical music a while back. Nearly everyone here likes classical except me... so that was sort of a potshot I directed at Cody in jest one night to bust his balls in that thread. I assumed that you had seen it at some point... I guess not.

I thought it would make for another light-hearted jab here... since you managed to make fun of country music, its songwriting and its fans (myself included) in one short paragraph.

My mistake... and apologies if I've offended.

I fail to see where I said every rock/metal song was good as well. "Every Rose" is so laughably bad that I can't help but crack up when I hear it, most country music just makes me go all bleh, although Johnny Cash fucking rocked.

oh no, not offended by the medicated post, except for the part about classical, but didnt know the back story on that. sorry if my response came off more harsh than intended.

howver Im offended now by the above post that u might think anyone would be defending the lyrical skill (oxymoron) of Poison. gimme some credit sheeesh!!!! LOL

however i do stand by my remark about country being the music of the mindless - which is not to imply that nothing i listen to is mindless as well. much of it is, and i like it.

I don't think I said that to you at all... All I did was poke fun at the study you posted.

No worries, Shireen.

I just think the generalizations can be dangerous (except in the case of classical gas ).

Besides, the best music out there is with your heart and your gut... not analyzed with your brain. :B

I guess ordinarily I like to keep my rock and country seperate. That's why I like the older country artists more. Keith Urban is one of the newer guys that manages to combine them, or at least everybody thinks he does. If you ask me, he's really pop/rock. I think the reason Urban and Bon Jovi don't get on my last nerve is because they don't have that thick Southern accent. And I truly believe that SOME country artists are exaggerating or completely faking their accents. And by the way, a lot of the 80's rock and metal music is completely and utterly embarrassing.

I guess for me if I hear a "country voice," I expect traditional country music.

not a big fan of straight country, particularly what's labeled as country these days.

ZZ Top and Skynyrd are probably as close as i get?

They're rock. Niche rock, but rock nonetheless.
