in 1981 I saw Judas Priest on the Worldwide Blitz Tour (Point of Entry) at the Convention Center in Indianapolis , Savoy Brown was the opener. I was about 10 feet from the stage and am pretty sure I lost some hearing that night.

I can relate to that. I used to stand next to the stage because I wanted to... now I do it because I can't really hear anything any other way. :lmao:

Savoy Brown seems like an odd pairing for Priest on its face... but then again, they got a lot heavier as the 70s went on. Must have been a great show either way... but just a few years before I was old enough to go to a concert (my first was '84 when I was 14). Priest came through several times when I was still too young to go... It used to eat me up.

I even had tickets to the "Fuel For Life" (Turbo) tour, with Dokken opening (Under Lock & Key)... but then had to work. To this day, that show is one of the infamous "ones that got away."

Lucky. I would love to hear that in concert. Except I don't know if Rob could do justice to it these days.

Gotta go with Bill on this one.

Did anyone see Judas Priest on the Download Fest. ...it was so bad he let the crowd sing Breaking the Law. Bruce's voice is as good ever IMO. In his day no Metal vocalist could sing higher than Rob, but that day has passed . :(

I don't like it, but it's true. And while their Grammy winning live album rocked, his singing of Painkiller was one of the worst things I've ever heard.

Well, I've seen both live and in the flesh a few times in the last couple of years... Obviously, I can't speak for every performance that people post on YouTube... but you might consider the source in some of those cases. An iPhone may be a cool toy (I said MAY, Suzi ), but it's hardly professional recording equipment.

Speaking strictly for the shows I've seen: I think that Halford's voice is holding up better than you guys seem to think... And Dickinson's voice is aging a bit more than you guys seem to think. Both still sound pretty darn good considering the decades of belting it out... but I would say that both would do well to consider semi-retirement in the next few years, because those decades have taken a toll on both. Just ask Paul Stanley and Klaus Meine.

At this point, all of the above are using diaphragm techniques and head tones to extend the high end of their ranges... and all use some measure of echo and reverb live (especially Rob and Bruce). Nothing to be ashamed of, though. They're all holding up better than guys 10 years younger than them.

That reminds me... Also in Halford's defense, he is 7 years older than Dickinson (60 and 54, respectively)... and has been performing professionally that much longer as well. In metal years, that's a long time.

As good as ever? :?

I saw Bruce in the 80s... and I've seen him in the last few years. I love me some Maiden... and he still does a very good job onstage... but I think we might be straining just a tad on that opinion.

And as far as the crowd sing-along goes... I don't think that any singer could top the sound of standing in the middle of a crowd of 30k headbangers belting out Breaking The Law at the top of their lungs. Why try? You might as well just raise your fist and enjoy the moment. 8)

It's just my opinion, though. You guys might be right. I was pretty happy with Halford's performances when I saw them, but he may have just been having good nights.

Either way, you'll get your wish soon enough... In the next year or so, guys like Halford and Klaus Meine will be gone with the wind.

I think I'm gonna cry. You mean old bullies. :cry2:

Me?

Well, next time... maybe I'll point out that the mighty RJD wasn't belting quite as loudly as he used to last time I saw him perform either... :?

Okay.......you mention RJD and it's time for the 'Ol Chrisser to chime in........

It's the high notes, people!! As hard as it is for me to say, even Ronnie couldn't hit those bastards near the end. I could easily defend Ronnie and say it was the cancer that kept him from hitting those fuckers, but look at dudes like Rob and Bruce.........same damn thing. It comes with age. Simple as that. We're not getting any younger......and those guys were getting old when we were in high school!

Now that I've vented, I think Rob and Bruce handle their business just fine these days. Just don't ask 'em to sing shit like "Screaming For Vengeance".

Amen. You tell 'em, brother. 8)

I think they're all doing a helluva job considering that they've been up on those stages screaming from the sack for 30-40 years.
