Patrick Prince of Powerline recently conducted an interview with drummer Andy Parker of British hard rock legends UFO. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
On UFO's new album, "Seven Deadly":

Andy: "I'm real happy with the mix as such because I haven't been totally happy with the last couple [of albums], drum-wise. Which is a bit selfish of me, but you obviously got to start with your own stuff and I felt that the last couple, the drums were a bit buried — but I really like the mix. We discussed this long and hard before I left the studio this time and I think he [Tommy Newton] actually came up with something that I like a bit better. It's more representative of me or how I would like to sound."

"There's some good stuff on there. It still has that blues kind of tone that we're going through right now, which the band has kind of been in since I came back in '05. I noticed that it had gone more from rock into the blues thing. And, to me, this whole blues thing, where it was at when I came back, it's kind of where it was at when I started with the band. That's where we came out of, so, to me, it was a natural progression to go back to your roots. I don't know if it's going to stay like that. As far as I'm concerned, it may not be to everyone's liking, but it's real. And it's from the heart. I think that matters more."

On whether he knew that the band had something special while in the studio for "Seven Deadly":

Andy: "It usually takes me awhile. I have this thing sometimes. If I really like an album straight out of the box, I get bored with it real quick. And some of our albums I have to listen to them. At first I think, 'Man, I don't like it that much.' It's a disappointment. It's like Christmas, I open up this gift and it's 'Oh, I didn't really want this.' But then after awhile you go, 'Hang on. I see.' You're kind of in the dark with [vocalist] Phil [Mogg] because he does keep things a bit quiet until he's ready. You go, 'Man, I wasn't expecting that!' And sometimes I find those are the ones I end up liking the most. They tend to creep up on you, you know."

On whether he thinks UFO should have been more popular in America, starting with back in their heyday:

Andy: "I think we would have been more popular. I think Michael's [Schenker] leaving was a very poor timing. I mean, we were really riding a wave there and we had some successful albums and the band was really getting a name, but there's no point in looking back. It's not gonna gain you anything. 'We could've been this. We could've been that.' Which is to say why I'm so happy we are out there still doing it. For what it is. Yeah, we don't play the huge places anymore, but there's something to be said for playing small intimate clubs. I really enjoy that. And I kind of missed that. And they're still out there to play. There was a time when those venues almost disappeared off the map. But now there's a lot more of them. And I really think that's healthy."

Well, UFO managed to get a reasonably good following in the States for awhile there... especially after Michael Schenker made a big splash with the Scorps.

Plus, a band with such a substantial legacy always seems to end up on the radar of the die-hard rockers. I didn't have much of their stuff until the last few years... but the more I listened, the more I liked... and the more I bought. I still have a few missing pieces (particularly some of their 80s and 90s stuff), but that's mainly because I don't know anyone who really knows anything about those releases to find out whether they are worth the buy. Plus, some of them are pretty hard to come by (read: steep), which also tends to hinder my "shot in the dark" buys.

I grab one here and there. The remaining few are in my Wish List, so every once in awhile I go through and clean house.

UFO released its new album, "Seven Deadly", on February 28 (one day earlier internationally) via SPV/Steamhammer. The effort, which was recorded with producer Tommy Newton at his Area 51 studio in Celle, Germany, was made available as a limited-edition digipack (including two bonus tracks), a double gatefold LP with printed innersleeves and colored vinyl, standard-edition CD and as a digital download.

"Seven Deadly" track listing:

01. Fight Night
02. Wonderland
03. Mojo Town
04. Angel Station
05. Year Of The Gun
06. The Last Stone Rider

According to a press release, "Seven Deadly" is "an atmospherically dense fabric consisting of classy guitars, tight rock grooves and vocals which are unique to UFO. The classic rock of 'Burn Your House Down' features all the important UFO strengths, 'Going Down To Mojotown' sees the musicians sound tougher than ever, and last but not least, 'Wonderland' features a pointed reference to UFO's early days. 'Angel Station' sees the band prove how classic rock music is complemented perfectly with epic elements, while 'Fight Night' is an excellent track to be performed in a live context."

The current UFO lineup continues to consist of the three original members, Phil Mogg (vocals), Paul Raymond (guitar, keyboards), and Andy Parker (drums), as well as American world-class guitarist Vinnie Moore.

The December 1st date will be right by my house!! Also the former singer for my band (Ruthless) is once again opening for them. This time with his band Scarred. If anyone wants tickets and a place to have a bit of a before or after party, drop me a Pm and we'll work something out. I'm definately going and so are some other former members of Ruthless. It should be a cool party.

Soooo,
I went to the December 1 show at the M15 theater here by my house. The venue was REALLY oversold. You couldnt get near the bar or a seat. Standing room only. Literally. UFO was really good and had it not been for the greed of the club owners, it would have been perfect. Still an awesome band.

Very cool, Todd. :B

I'd love to catch these guys if they'd ever play on my end of the country.

Mark Kadzielawa of 69 Faces Of Rock recently conducted an interview with UFO drummer Andy Parker. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

69 Faces Of Rock: This by far is the longest running incarnation of UFO. What is in place now in order to achieve such consistency?

Andy Parker: I think , it's the lack of crazy people. [laughs] We have people in the band now that actually want to go out and play rather than abuse substances and throw tantrums. It's great; the band is getting along, and let's face it, we're here for the music. Sometimes the other things take over, but it's a very strong band. I'm real happy, and I think everyone else is.

69 Faces Of Rock: One band member who is still missing in action is [bassist] Pete Way. Any updates on Pete's whereabouts, or a possibility of him rejoining the band?

Andy Parker: He's the substance-abuse factor. No, but he is surviving as Pete survives. I believe he's made a solo album, but I don't think it hit the streets yet. Pete had plenty of opportunities to straighten himself up and come back. But, he doesn't seem to be willing to do it. And we're not really willing, I mean, we love Pete. But he's not really capable of playing to the level that we want to perform right now. That's about the best thing I can say. He doesn't seem to want to make a change, so right now I don't see him back. I mean, the door is always open, if he wants to make some life changes. He doesn't seem to feel that's necessary.

69 Faces Of Rock: Since UFO regrouped with Vinnie Moore on guitar in 2004, there's been a new album every two years. All of you live apart from each other, so how do you make it happen?

Andy Parker: So far so good. Yeah, that's kind of difficult, and if you noticed, I didn't have much of an input on the last album — pretty much nothing. And that's because I've had a lot of stuff going in my personal life. It is difficult. What seems to happen is guys put their ideas together when we're off the road, and then we meet and check them around. Phil [Mogg, vocals] will sort through them, and make the selections. He picks the ones he feels he can work with, and he'll go out and do his stuff, and then we come back together and record. The last three albums I've recorded in Germany, and Phil's done his vocals in Germany, too. Vinnie tends to do all his work from his home in Delaware. It works for him. In a way, it works because it's a lot less expensive to do it that way, and it gets done very quickly. I miss the process where you feed off each other. I'm usually in the studio on my own just playing to scratch tracks, which is OK, because there isn't any pressure on me, but you miss that connection with the other guys. So it has its ups and downs.

69 Faces Of Rock: Each time there is a new UFO release, people tend to compare it to your '70s records. Are such comparisons fair anymore?

Andy Parker: I don't think so. I mean, obviously, Vinnie received a lot of hate when he joined the band. Everyone wanted Michael Schenker, and Michael is brilliant, and that was a great era, but that was 30 years ago. Others wanted Paul Chapman. But the band moved on, the band matured, and the band is still putting out viable material. I'm not knocking the fans down. We've got fans that had been with us for a long time, but you know, you can't please everybody. I think the best way to go is just play from the heart, and that, to me, is why I love this band so much. It's always been from the heart for me.
