I find Sammy's early solo work to be spotty, but there's more than enough good rock tunes that make those albums worth seeking out.

I reached a bit of a milestone today, and finally got Nine on a Ten Scale on vinyl. I now have all his Capitol albums on record...not the easiest task (without resorting to ebay and the like that is.)

Overall, whether we're talking CD, LP, or cassette, locating Sammy Hagar's early solo work was 2nd only to Y&T in terms of rarity. Again, we're talking pre-internet.

Anyone else have anything to say about Hagar's career circa 1976-80?

D'oh!! Sorry Steve I had meant to "QUOTE" your post and reply to it, but I ended up "EDITING" instead...gah it's too early.

On my next trip to amazon, I plan on scratching a long-time Hagar catalogue itch. Unnecessary and illogical though it may be, it really couldn't be any other way with me.

Itch: Scratched. Now let's see if it gets here.

I was just about to chastise Steve for buying the 1st Chickenfoot again but...that would be very hypocritical of me. You see, I just ordered an album I already have...sort of.

Here's the one I own:
http://www.tower.com/all-night-long-sam ... /105783111

Here's the one I just ordered:
http://heavymetalbreed.blogspot.ca/2009 ... -live.html

All Night Long was released in 1978 (I reviewed it in Cuts From the Crypt) in North America, but wasn't released in the UK until 1980, under the title Loud and Clear. Same album, with the exception of the addition of "Space Station #5" added.

It's nagged at me for years that I had all of Sammy's solo CDs...sort of. The fact that they gave it a different cover and title kind of stuck in my craw until finally something inside me broke.

It's a terrible, terrible addiction. Don't try this at home.

I suppose I could have ended up the same way with the variations in Judas Priest albums. If not for the grace of god....

I find that Sammy's stuff that I like is heavier when it comes to the guitar. When it starts to sound thin like I pretty much tune out. Alice Cooper is the same way. JMO

I do the same thing with the relentless double bass kick in power metal.

Cookie Monster vocals lose me...instantly...I don't understand some of these bands who are immensely talented, launch into a killer riff/groove and then...all that hard work for naught when Cookie rocks the mic.

Methinks this is getting off-topic, but I've derailed many a thread. Better than no activity.

I see that. I was like, "I know I posted in here?!?!"

No worries, I just think I said that I didn't have any of his 70s stuff on CD besides a few early live/compilation titles.

Is that a re-recorded version of Space Station #5? Or did he just lift and plant the version from the 1st Montrose album?

Just curious.

Agreed. Hell, I've lost count of how many copies of "Rocka Rolla" and "Sad Wings..." I have in various formats, labels, etc...

I like some of Sammy's trippier stuff... such as In The Room from "Three Lock Box"...

I'm not sure about "Space Station #5" Steve...I was thinking it was the version that eventually turned up on Live 1980, but I'm not sure.

Hey Steve, ever notice how the next song after "In the Room," starts off with the line "I just...came out...from the room"?

3LB is possibly my fave Sammy solo disc, but M2M makes a strong case...love that one too.

Rise Of The Animal... Yep. Always good for a chuckle. :gig:

Another good tune, BTW... synths and all.

That's funny... I'm probably most partial to "Standing Hampton" and "Sammy Hagar/I Never Said Goodbye" myself.

In fairness, though, with "Marching To Mars," I seldom listen to anything but Would You Do It For Free? and occasionally Leaving The Warmth Of The Womb.

Here's a blast from the past... I was skipping through some of my soundtracks this morning (I have quite a few), and came across "Over The Top"... Anyone remember that cheesy-ass Stallone arm-wrestling/trucking movie?

Needless to say, the soundtrack was the best part. Hagar had a hit on that one... Winner Takes It All.

Great tune. 8)

Also features Kenny Loggins' hit, Meet Me Halfway... along with tunes by Robin Zander (In This Country), Asia (Gypsy Soul... great tune) and Eddie Money (I Will Be Strong).

That's why I love soundtracks... They're almost always a mixed bag of artists and genres... and sometimes, non-album tracks.

I also bought the UK "Majestic Rock" version of Y&T's Open Fire simply because it had the "flames" cover.

I was going to make fun of that, until I recalled my little sub-collection of the various editions of Judas Priest's "Rocka Rolla"... :?

...and I won't pretend I wasn't excited in 1997 when I could finally buy a CD of Creatures of the Night with the original cover. Putting Ace on the cover of an album he didn't play on still makes more sense to me, than putting Bruce on the cover of a then 3-year old album that he didn't play on.

Got it! It's actually a 2010 remaster too, was not expecting that. Nice write up as recent as Chickenfoot too. Now, the important stuff, "Space Station #5" is NOT the same version as on Live 1980, I've never heard this version before.

One of my favourite live albums ever, no matter what title or cover it has.

NOW...I can finally say I've got all Sammy Hagar solo albums.
