A special two hour edition of the 80s at 8, I pulled a chart dated Jan 26/85 from RPM (Canada's equivalent to Billboard back then) and featuring songs that were in the top 100, this coming Saturday. This show will bring back a lot of memories for me because it was early 1985 that I started listening to music in earnest, top 40 radio etc. Even the cheesiest of songs from this era bring a smile, and the truly good songs still sound good.

The rest of the show will be the usual mix of 60s, 70s and 80s...really trying to throw some lesser heard songs in...it's an uphill battle with what I have to work with but we hold on.

Wow, cool factoid Steve...great list of songs too, only a handful will be on the show, simply because Jan. 1985 is still dealing...mostly with songs that came out in 1984. I should have a full listing tomorrow.

The sad thing is that Steve probably pulled that list off the top of his head.

in January '85

Enjoy!

If I had to make a guess it would be some of the Canadian acts that were big here, but nowhere else in the world.

Luba, Spoons and Parachute Club don't ring a bell for me either. Must be the Canadian contingent.

Wish I could get the stream to work here... It's nice to listen to the radio and actually hear songs I don't really know... but have a chance of liking (unlike most tunes today).

Great set, dude! :tup

:BB Turn Up The Radio

(Sorry, gotta go back to 1984 for that one...)

Well all three of those acts would best fit the new wave category, I'd say, although Luba was more of a singer songwriter...let me see if I can find some points of reference.

Luba...are you familiar with the group I, Napoleon? On their debut album (their only one I think) from 1991 they cover her ballad "Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry." She released three albums on Capitol Records in the 80s.

the Spoons...very new wave, kind of in the Human League ballpark...their original keyboard player Rob Preuss went on to play on one album and tour by Honeymoon Suite...

Parachute Club...hmmm....again very new wave, one of their albums was produced by John Oates (yes, that John Oates) and he sang on their song "Love is Fire."

For every Rush and Bryan Adams there are countless other acts like these that were really, really big in Canada (Platinum Blonde, Gowan, Northern Pikes, etc.) for a period of time but couldn't get arrested in the states. Even though they all had their albums released on major U.S. labels...it's a hard market to break through.

I was fortunate to grow up living right on the U.S. border (next to Maine if anyone's counting) so I had the combination of U.S. Top 40 radio (Rick Dees, Casey Kasem) and Canadian content via MuchMusic. In fact when I was just a wee pup I remember being quite surprised to discover Loverboy were actually Canadian, because American radio played them all the time.

I could go on and on about this really...

Not familiar with any of those acts, except for Platinum Blonde... and that's only because I was given an LP copy of "Contact" by a friend of mine who DJ'd at a local radio station. Ironically, I still have it right here in my office... but don't think it's ever seen a turntable.

I agree about the odd invisible border between Canada and the U.S... Living in upstate NY though, I think I was lucky in a similar way. I got word about a few bands that didn't seem to get any airplay in the rest of the States... April Wine being the best example I can think of off-hand.
