30 long years since 1979’s Breaking Loose debut, Canada’s Helix just released a brand new album, full of classic Helix hard rockers, some country-tinged tunes, and even a special guest vocalist! I had only heard one song from this album before seeing the boys rock Fredericton last Wednesday night; but the three tunes they aired live (actually the first three on the disc) easily made their way into my cranial passages even before I popped the CD in. Actually heard songs 1 and 3 in soundcheck as well.

1) The Animal Inside (Won’t Be Denied) – Perfect Helix album opener, excellent shout out chorus with its tag line of “eat ‘em up, eat ‘em up, eat ‘em alive.” Wouldn’t sound out of place on any of Helix’s 80s albums.
2) Go Hard or Go Home – Very similar to chorus to the classic “Six Strings, Nine Lives” but that’s not a problem, another rocker.
3) Vagabond Bones – The title song is an excellent summation of the Helix way of life; I love the line “You’ll never see my name on the walk of fame,” this bluesy rocker sports a riff not unlike Brighton Rock’s “Young, Wild & Free,” whose guitarist Greg Fraser actually had a stint in Helix in the ‘90s.
4) Monday Morning Meltdown – A little easing up on the throttle here, a well-harmonized midtempo number, one of four songs on this album co-written with Moe Berg of fellow Canadian band Pursuit of Happiness (remember “I’m an Adult Now”?
5) When the Bitter’s Got the Better of You – This one shuffles like a long-lost Aerosmith classic, great chorus hook…
6) Hung Over But Still Hangin’ In – A dream for fans of classic Canadian hard rock, this groove-laden tune about “the morning after” is actually a duet between Vollmer and Killer Dwarfs vocalist Russ Graham. Hopefully the boys add this one to the setlist; haven’t heard a better barroom rocker in a long time.
7) Best Mistake I Ever Made – I had the pleasure of hearing this one advance of them album, this song wouldn’t sound out of place on “new country” stations. Extremely personal lyric from Brian on this one, with a catchy chorus to match. Somewhat reminiscent of “That Day is Gonna Come.”
8) Make ‘em Dance – Simple, catchy hard rocker with the typical Helix off-the-rails lyrics.
9) Jack it Up – Another song that would slide in quite easily into the setlist.

These might sound seem like brief descriptions of the songs, but this is Helix folks, y’either like ‘em or ya don’t. Well I do, and the band delivers here. A short but sweet album, no fat just lean and begs to be listened to again and again.

Awesome album. Classic Helix goodness... and Vollmer can still carry a tune pretty darn well. 8)
