Awake is Skillet's 8th album, it was released on August 25,2009. This album debuted #2 on the billboard 200. I was much eagerly awaiting this album after hearing "Hero" and "Monster", hearing those two new songs sparked my interest back into Skillet, I found this album to have way less Christian overtones as some of their previous albums had. it also has some heavier guitars, which I always love. Overall I thought it was a great album, one of the major factors in this album being so good was the production, they have all the right little breaks and everything. This album also features brand new drummer/vocalist Jen Ledger, who is smoking hot :D. By the way, this is my Christmas present to you guys :). I have also been thinking about this and may post a little bit at the end, but could this possibly be a concept album?.

PS: Apparently there's more Christian Undertones than overtones, stupid me and not finding the subliminal messages to worship Jesus.

Track listing

1. Hero 3:08
2. Monster 2:59
3. Don't Wake Me 3:55
4. Awake & Alive 3:31
5. One Day Too Late 3:40
6. It's Not Me It's You 3:24
7. Should've When You Could've 3:31
8. Believe 3:50
9. Forgiven 3:39
10. Sometimes 3:29
11. Never Surrender 3:31
12. Lucy 3:38

1) Hero
The albums first single. opens with a simplistic yet neat little guitar intro. Jen's singing compliments John's throughout the song, giving it just a touch of femininity, while maintaining a pretty cool drum beat in the back, the lyrics can grab you whether you think its about Jesus or take it like I did and think that we all have our own personal Hero living inside each and every one of us. Great song!
10/10

2) Monster
Second single off of the album. Maintains a catchy and somewhat heavy guitar riff. there's nothing too much I can say about this song other than it makes you wanna rock out like no tomorrow. I'd love to see a heavier band cover this :).
8/10

3) Don't Wake Me
A Beautiful acoustic track. It all builds for a semi-climatic bridge that is then followed by just an acoustic accompanied half chorus. All the while there is a pretty cool guitar riff playing in the choruses. All these add up to a pretty good song. A sad song when you think about the lyrics.
8.5/10

4) Awake and Alive
Opens up with a nice violin intro :violin:, that comes back a couple of times in the song, giving it this nice classy feel, Has one of the best guitar solos on it in the entire album. The lyrics are pretty much a reverse of "Don't Wake Me".
9/10
*Note. I found it weird that these two songs were opposite in lyrics but the song that sounded more musically "Happier" (Don't Wake Me) wasn't. While the song that sounded more musically "Sad" (Awake and Alive) was lyrically Happy. Weird...

5)One Day To Late
A softer and slower song that didn't really grab me, except for the chorus and the lyrics. The chorus to me is just so f***ing great I love it. The lyrics make you think and ponder, and want to go out and do some good.
6.5/10

6) It's Not Me It's You
An angry song. Oh no an angry Christian rock song! Everybody run! I love the the guitar break of a solo, well I guess it's not really a solo but still its pretty neat :). This song to me was so well produced though, everything from the double chorus to the timing was executed perfectly, definitely one of my favourites.
10/10

7) Should've When You Could've
A song to cool you down after that angry last one, Cool main riffs and acoustic bridge riff. Love the one line of the song "Now I won’t be here to clean up when it hits the fan". All around decent song. nothign special though.
6/10

8) Believe
A truly beautiful song. The subtle beginning picks up to a catchy chorus. Another well produced song, when I listen to this song it gives me that shiver, yes you all know what I'm talking about :)
10/10

9) Forgiven
Another beautiful song, when I listen to to the one part of the song "Now I’m in our secret place
Alone in your embrace
Where all my wrongs have been erased
You have forgiven"
I think about me and my girlfriend and its a good thinking. Another couple of parts I love
"I can’t explain cause I don’t know
No one can take your place
And there is no other
Forever yours and yours alone"
"I get down on my knees
Feel your love wash over me
There will never be another
You’re the only one forever
And you know I’m yours alone"
I love the lyrics in this song, they're are just so freaking amazing. A great followup to Believe.
9/10

10) Sometimes
Another mediocre song, nothing to standout of the song, only thing is the guitar solo, second best on the album :P. not complex at all but cool little solo.
7/10

11) Never Surrender
An amazing song that touches you...Not in a sexual way...but in a good non sexual way. Another song that gives me that shiver, a great message is put into the song. I love the way John weaves his words together to form these works of art.
9/10

12) Lucy
A great slow song. Don't know what else to say about it other than  it brings a tear to my eye.
8/10

Overall Album Score 8.6/10

If you don't need that blazing fast awesome Yngwie solo, or that Neil Peart drumming then this is a great album. Full of amazing lyrics and awesome production, I would recommend if you're not too hardcore to go out and get this album, and maybe Collide and Comatose ;).

You summed it up to a "T".......HMJ. I still don't think it's quite as good as "Comatose", but it's getting closer every day.

Thanks for a kick-ass review!!

Their 8th album and I've never heard of them. One of these days I'm going to have to turn on the radio. Interesting review.

Anything before their Forsaken album is shit

Comatose is a hard album to beat, I've heard "Hero" and "Monster" on the radio and they've peaked my interest. Good female vocals, but I'm surprised Cooper's wife (the keyboardist) doesn't provide that female backing voice like she used too.

If I can find this down in CT cheap I'll be picking it up.

HMJ - I think this is the first review you've written that I read. I, like Bildo, have never even heard of them, but what you've said in this review has me curious now... thanks!

Just because you don't remember things, doesn't mean they're not awesome...It just means you're getting a little senile
