Favorite Band: Y&T since 1981
Edited from my original post on the Y&T forum last year.

As a Y&T fan since 1981 I’m embarrassed that I never got around to getting the "Ten" album until last year. I suppose since the album was released in 1990 that 18 years can be considered untimely. I am very impressed that acclaimed drummer Steve Smith played on all but three of the numbers. For those of you who didn’t know, Mike Vanderhule studied with Steve Smith. Steve also played with Ronnie Montrose and a virtually unknown Bay Area band called Journey.:gig:

According to the liner notes Stef Burns played the guitar solos on City, Red Hot & Ready, Let It Out and Goin’ Off the Deep End. I guess that just goes to show that Dave Meniketti is a humble guy allowing Stef to play leads on this album. I still think Dave’s a much better guitarist though.

Hard Times – Starts out with a bitchin guitar effect. I’m not sure if it’s a delay or a Meniketti toggle effect. Dave’s guitar solo has an Open Fire feel and kicks ass. It has another familiar feel that I just can’t put my finger on.

Lucy – Good tune composed by Phil. I still can’t tell if Lucy is a tramp that this dude is in love with or if she’s not a tramp, but everyone thinks she is, and this dude is in love with her.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark – The best song on the album. I absolutely love this number. From the guitar intro to the vocal harmonies it’s definitely an all time great Y&T tune.

Girl Crazy – A fitting song for the time period. Glam.

City – A cool tune about life on the road. The bluesy intro and bluesy feel makes this tune a keeper.

Come in From the Rain – The intro to this ballad is very dramatic. I absolutely love Dave’s vocals on this track.

Red Hot & Ready – not one of the greatest tunes the band has ever recorded. Sorry!

She’s Gone – All I can say is “I need more cowbell.” This song grabs you by the balls from the very beginning. It’s got some great guitar riffs and licks. Oh yeah, it’s about a dude who’s upset that his woman left him.

Let it Out – Great vocals, but I’m not sure I like this one.

Ten Lovers – This is a really great song. Having an acoustic guitar in a Y&T song really deviates from the crunch we’re used to. Phil wrote it by the way. Great song.

Goin’ Off the Deep End – not one of the greatest tunes the band has ever recorded.

Surrender – Not the “Mommy’s alright Daddy’s alright” Surrender. This is a great freakin song and the band needs to put in on their set list. It's about a guy professing his love and asking his love interest to do the same for him. I love Phil's bassline and the drums on this one.

I saw this review over at Y&T, so I asked Mikel if he would post it over here for us. I moved it to the "Cuts From The Crypt" section so it would be with the rest of our reviews and easy to find.

"Ten" is an underrated classic, IMO. One of their most overlooked albums at that. I found my first copy of it in a cassette bargain bin after I thought Y&T was already long dead. I was pleasantly surprised and never looked back. Ironically, last time I checked, it was still readily available (Geffen) and used copies are dirt-cheap. Check it out, if you haven't already... :tup

Many thanks to Mikel for sharing his excellent review here with us... :B

I think he did an excellent job... 8)

I might have to hire that guy since we'll never get another review out of Ben. :P

Work of art from beginning to end. My favourite Y&T album in a catalogue of favourites.
