After watching the latest "Crossroads Festival" DVDs, I was really impressed with this guy's voice and blues chops... but he only appears to have 3 CDs. Two are OOP and going for a small fortune (except for the digital versions, of course)... and his latest was only released digitally, so I bit the bullet and let the bits fly (or crawl, in my case).

I really, really enjoyed this disc, but I doubt anyone else here would care for it much. It features a couple of great modern blues numbers (right up my alley, in fact 8))... a couple of cool bluesy instrumentals... a couple of modern R&B tracks (somewhat urban... but not over-the-top... very listenable)... a very good pop rock tune... and a track that really sounds like an early Motown classic (Awesome tune!). Very well done. After a full run-through, I'd say the guy sounds like a bluesier and more talented version of Lenny Kravitz... and I like Lenny Kravitz.

Dude can play the hell out of the guitar, with an old-school electric blues vibe... and he's got a tremendous voice. His vocals are really top-notch throughout... but the falsetto vocal-work he does on the Motown tune would make Smoky Robinson break down and cry. I shit you not. Color me fucking impressed. 8)

If talent were important in the music business, this guy would be on Billboard's Top 10 right now. Guaranteed.

I hope the record execs are enjoying their Kayne West pop/rap/country drivel in the meantime. :tdown

The track list:
Intro: Retro R&B... basically an instrumental... Temptations vibe. Nice.
:B :B :B :B :b

Bright Lights: The blues number he performed at the "Crossroads Festival"...
:B :B :B :B :B :b

Don't Owe You A Thang: An upbeat blues number... well done...
:B :B :B :B :B

Please Come Home: The Motown number... phenomenal!
:B :B :B :B :B :B

The Life: Modern R&B... a bit jazzy... fairly poppy, but well done...
:B :B :B :B :b

Things Are Changing: Another modern R&B tune... definitely bit of a Stanley Jordan vibe. Excellent.
:B :B :B :B :B

Outro: Instrumental... Fusion, wah-soaked guitars... Outstanding musicianship.
:B :B :B :B :B

Breakdown: Pop rock jam... It would fit in nicely on pop radio, but we'll never hear it there.
:B :B :B :B :b

The lack of focus in the album makes me think he's still writing songs in hopes of hitting it big. It seems pretty obvious that he tried putting out a variety of styles to see if anything sticks. Personally, I think he should stick with the adult contemporary circuit, where he could still get some airplay doing the blues and jazz fusion stuff. He excels in those realms and isn't going to get a fair shake anywhere else.

For my tastes: :B :B :B :B :B :b

For the rest of you: :B :B :B :b

NOTE: By no means am I trying to sell anyone short here or come across as insulting. I just want to give an honest rating for you all, since I don't think any of your tastes tend to be anywhere near as eclectic (read: eccentric, and sometimes downright schizophrenic ) as mine. This album is really all over the place, rarely approaching the average rocker's wheelhouse... and I don't get the impression that most of you would really enjoy the old blues, R&B or jazz-fusion stuff featured here, so I don't want to point you this way (from a rock/metal fan's perspective).

The only reason I really reviewed this was because he was featured in the new "Crossroads" DVDs, and I thought a few of you might be interested from that standpoint. That said, the album only touches on that type of blues on a couple of tracks, so I would recommend you buy just those tracks (taking full advantage of the digital release format).

That said, I think Please Come Home is so well done, it will melt the panties off of any red-blooded American girl... and some of the guys as well. Be careful where you play it.

Kind of what I assumed for most of the folks here, but I thought a couple might be interested due to the "Crossroads" connection.

Sadly, Shireen would have enjoyed the hell out of this one. Her tastes tend to run a bit more in this direction like me.

Not a blues fan myself either, Gary. However, I'll say the first time I heard Gary Moore's "Still Got The Blues" disc, I completely understood the passion behind the music.
