2.Serious
3.Nurse Rozetta
4.The Quiet Room
5.I Never Cry
6.Devil's Food
7.Welcome To My Nightmare
8.Billion Dollar Babies

12.The Black Widow
13.Wish I Was Born In Beverly Hills
14.Ballad Of Dwight Fry
15.Go To Hell
16.How You Gonna See Me Now
17.Inmates (We're All Crazy)
18.School's Out

Most big fans of Alice Cooper always seem to list From The Inside as one of their favorite albums from his solo career. I am no different. Written after Alice's stay in a sanitarium because of alcohol abuse, the songs are co-written by Bernie Taupin, Elton John's long time song-writing partner. The original album has 3 types of songs: Alice's personal demons and recovery from alcoholism, individuals that he supposedly met while locked away, and general anthemic songs about sanity (or lack thereof.) It was a great album and a great idea for a concert. Unfortunately, The Strange Case Of Alice Cooper is what we got instead.

Great musicians - check.
Crazy hi-jinx - check.
Dancers - check.
Alice Cooper - well, that's the problem.

Alice is gaunt and emaciated for this show, very unhealthy looking. He says on the DVD that once you beat something you should be allowed to make fun of it. I guess he should have waited then because he would relapse a few years after this tour. He's definitely sober, but his manic movements aren't necessarily because of acting. While watching, it appeared to me that his body was still trying to get used to sobriety. And the singing, well, there isn't much of it. He avoids high notes, lets the band fill in lines, skips some lines entirely, and does a style of almost talking that sounds like a constipated William Shatner. He doesn't look so much crazy as in acting crazy. He looks more like "Mommy, look at that man twitching while he walks down the sidewalk" crazy.

It's only at the finale when he introduces the band that any personality comes out. It's only in the final few minutes of the concert that I found myself having a good time. Unfortunately, too little - too late. To be fair, my score does not take into account the commentary by Alice that can also be found on this DVD. It is going to be a long time before I can bear to watch this again to hear that commentary. Hopefully he actually comments about what his body and mind was going through at the time and about the quality of the performance. Only in a historical aspect could this item have any redeeming value. Alice continues to record shows to this day, over 30 years sine The Strange Case, and they are all performed much, much better. How ironic that a man who gave up alcohol manages to get better with time like finely aged wine.

So don't waste your money on this one. Or your time. I give this 1 out of 10.

The 1 out of 10 is because of the following:

1) Steve Hunter
2) Alice's comment regarding KISS without saying their name
3) women in underwear
4) seeing a young Alice at the beginning and end of the show being interviewed
5) 70s porn mustaches
6) Alice first introduced the black dancer as Martin Luthor Queen

Well you sure saved me from rushing right out and buying it!

On a serious note, diehard fans DO tend to be much more critical. Take Dio's "Holy Diver Live" CD and DVD.......as much as I hate to say it, this one is horrible IMO. GREAT musicianship, but Ronnie had a terrible cold the night it was recorded, and it really stood out. For the life of me I still can't figure out why they didn't record it at a later date. No REAL reason was ever given.......save for the fact that it was a venue issue. I mean C'mon......he's Ronnie James fucking Dio.......he could have recorded the show ANYWHERE! So needless to say.........if I'm introducing someone to Ronnie's music, this would be the LAST show I'd recommend. Sounds like this Alice show might be the same deal.

Wow. It's like Bizarro World!

1.) Bill actually wrote a review.

2.) Bill slammed Uncle Alice and the Cooptones.

3.) Chris responds by slamming Ronnie James and the Other Six Dwarves.

What's this world coming to?

Great review, Billster... You should write more of them. :tup

Unfortunately, I know that a professional film crew requires a lot of lead time and costs a small fortune, not to mention editing and mixing, so I guess that explains why some of these less-than-stellar gigs make it to the store shelves. Filming a show also requires special permission and contracts with the venue... and pro audio quality recording and set-up goes well beyond the standard soundboard recordings. With the record company shelling out for all these expenses up-front, they definitely want everything done on schedule so that they can get the product on the shelves. Like the tour itself, everything is scheduled out months in advance, from the camera crew and audio recording team right down to the post-production video editors and audio mixers and engineers... so if the artist is under the weather that night, there's nothing they can really do except get on with the show and hope for the best. The crews can't just wait a week and reset... they'll be packed up and onto the next gig long before that. If the recordings are not used for whatever reason, it represents a total loss for the record label.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear that the DVD wasn't up to snuff, Bill. I'm sure you had high hopes for it. :B

If it's Alice and Bill doesn't like it... it must really suck and I don't want it.

I agree with Steve that was a stellar review. :B

Thanks, fellers. If you look at my album reviews, you'll notice a trend of me taking the easy way out and only reviewing albums that I really like. I probably rate things a little too high, but I'm consistent with it so people should take that into consideration when deciding if it might be something they are interested in. But this one is just bad. I didn't even point out the technical glitch. I believe it's when Alice is getting electrocuted that it completely jumps to some other song. Oh, and it was cool to hear Vincent Price's voice when the cyclops opened the show.

Yep. It's just one of those things I guess... When an Alice show is good, it's very good... but when it's bad... BLECH!

I'm glad this is finally being released on DVD, but having seen a boot of this, I pretty much agree. It's hard to watch. Alice is in horrible shape. But Steve is right, that's when the film crew was there, that's when they had to film. Even more costly back in those days I'm sure.

That has to be the reasoning behind Rush's Time Machine DVD, which I'm not buying. Geddy sounds horrible (I know to non-Rush fans Geddy always sounds horrible, but I'm a fan and I'm saying it. His voice is cracking all over the place. What's worse, not only does he sound horrible, he sounds like it hurts him.)

Next in line for reissue: "The Nightmare" or how about that bizarre "Paris Special"

Can't say I'm familiar with the Paris special. And there seems to be a couple of "nightmare" things. I think one was a tv special, one might have been a film, and then there was the nightmare returns. Soon to be even more confusing because I'm sure they will film the upcoming Welcome 2 My Nightmare tour.

It is a little confusing..."Welcome to My Nightmare" refers to the show Alice did on that tour
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welcome_to ... mare_(film)
I never cared for this concert, thought the sound was horrible and they made every song sound very, very "light."

"The Nightmare" is this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Coop ... _Nightmare

"The Nightmare Returns" is this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nightmare_Returns

and then there's...

I have two of them, but that Paris one looks cool as hell. It covers the portion of his career that was pretty much ignored in America.

I dig those albums too...they're so quirky.

That's probably what you said about this "Strange Case..." DVD too... right before the nausea hit. :P
